Nose
Anatomical overview
The nose is an organ for both breathing and smelling. Her visible part is in the centre of the face, and her shape is determined by the ethmoid bone and the nasal septum, which consists mostly of cartilage and which separates the nostrils.
In inhale, the air is warmed and moisturized by the nasal mucosa. In exhale, the mucosa gets a majority of the warmth and moisture back. The air is cleaned from particles by hairs and secrete. The secrete is transported to the pharynx by ciliated epithelium, while captured particles are expelled by sneezing.
The sensation of the nose is innervated by the trigeminal nerve (fifth cranial nerve). The olfacory area is restricted to the upper part of the nasal cavity.
