Female Breast – Overview
Anatomy
The female breasts (mammae) are secondary sexual attributes. They are equipped to nourish the baby with milk after birth: the milk is produced in lobular glands, collected in excretory ducts, and passed on to the nipples (mamillae) where it can be sucked by the child. The embryological anlage for breast glands is found in both females and males!
Apart from these functional structures that take shape during puberty and expand during pregnancy, the breast consists of adipose tissue (connective tissue) traversed by lymph and blood vessels.
The breasts and especially the nipples are erogenous zones whose skin is very sensitive and stimulate release of sexual hormones.
